The Gothic main façade of Barcelona Cathedral on Pla de la Seu in the Gothic Quarter

Where to Stay in the Gothic Quarter

The Barri Gòtic is Barcelona's medieval core, between La Rambla and Via Laietana. You can walk to almost everything, but the lanes are narrow, busy and, on some squares, loud until late.

The Short Answer

Stay in the upper Gothic Quarter, around the Cathedral and Portal de l'Àngel, if it's your first visit. It is about 10 minutes' walk from Plaça de Catalunya and the airport buses, the streets are a little wider, and the nights are calmer than down by Plaça Reial. Our pick there is H10 Madison, whose rooftop bar looks straight at the Cathedral.

Stay around Plaça Sant Felip Neri and Plaça Sant Just for the quietest, most atmospheric lanes; Hotel Neri and the Mercer are both here. The lower Gothic, toward Carrer Ample and the port, is handy for the waterfront and the cruise terminals. Avoid rooms on Plaça Reial and the lower end of La Rambla if you sleep lightly: the bars there keep going late.

Noise, Crowds and Pickpockets

  • Pickpockets work the busiest spots: La Rambla, Plaça Reial, the Cathedral square and the metro. They often work in teams and use distraction, so keep phones off café tables and bags zipped and in front of you. Violent crime against visitors is not the issue here; petty theft is.
  • Ask for an interior room if your hotel is on a square or a main lane. Narrow stone lanes carry sound from bars and late walkers.
  • Expect stairs and narrow lanes. Taxis can't reach every door, and a few small hotels and hostels have limited elevators. Ask before you book if anyone has trouble walking.
  • Keep noise down at night. People live here, and the city asks visitors to respect rest times in residential streets.

Getting Around the Gothic Quarter

  • On foot: Plaça de Catalunya to the Cathedral is about 10 minutes, the Cathedral to the Picasso Museum in El Born under 10, and the Gothic Quarter to Barceloneta beach about 20.
  • Metro: Liceu and Drassanes (L3) on La Rambla, Jaume I (L4) on Via Laietana, and Catalunya (L1, L3) at the top.
  • From the airport: the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya takes about 35 minutes, and the upper Gothic Quarter is a 5–10 minute walk from the stop.
  • To Sagrada Família: metro from Passeig de Gràcia or a 35–40 minute walk. See our Sagrada Família guide if you want to stay next to it.
