Barcelona-Sants is the city's main station for high-speed and regional trains and the R2 Nord to the airport. The streets around it are practical rather than pretty, but you can be on a platform minutes after leaving your room.

The Short Answer

For an early train or a quick airport transfer, stay at the station. Our pick is the Barceló Sants, which is built over the platforms and connects directly to the high-speed trains, the metro and the R2 Nord airport train. The Nobu Hotel next door is the luxury option, with a rooftop pool and family suites.

For a longer stay, a hotel on Avinguda de Roma, such as the Catalonia Roma or H10 Itaca, is under 10 minutes from the station and a little closer to the Eixample. For a full trip, though, most visitors are happier in the center: metro L3 runs from Sants to La Rambla and L5 to Sagrada Família, so the Eixample or the Gothic Quarter is an easy ride away with luggage.

What to Know Before You Book

  • Watch your bags in the station. As at any big station, thieves look for distracted travelers with luggage. Keep bags in sight and close to you, especially while you buy tickets or check the departure boards.
  • Check late check-in rules. Some budget options near Sants don't take arrivals after 11 pm, which matters if your train is late.
  • Pools are seasonal. Rooftop pools here usually close in winter; the Catalonia Roma's pool, for example, is closed from November to March.
  • Trade fairs fill the area. Sants is close to Plaça d'Espanya and the Fira, so prices rise during big events such as Mobile World Congress (1–4 March 2027).

Getting from Sants to the Airport and the Sights

  • To the airport: the R2 Nord train runs from Sants to Terminal 2 in about 20 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening. For Terminal 1, take the free 24-hour shuttle bus from T2, which takes about 15 minutes.
  • Metro: L3 from Sants Estació runs to Espanya, Paral·lel and Liceu on La Rambla; L5 runs to Diagonal for Passeig de Gràcia and on to Sagrada Família.
  • On foot: Sants to Plaça d'Espanya takes about 15 minutes, and from there Poble Sec and Montjuïc begin.
