Where to Stay in Barcelona on a Budget

Barcelona is not a cheap city to sleep in, but central private rooms and good hostels do exist, especially in the Raval, Poble Sec, Gràcia and the Eixample's guesthouses. Budget for the tourist tax, and avoid the big event weeks if you can.

The Short Answer

For a cheap private room in the center, look in the Raval and the Eixample's small guesthouses. Our pick is Hotel Peninsular, a former convent with a skylit courtyard a minute from La Rambla, with single, triple and family rooms at hostal prices. Hostal Grau, near the MACBA, is a close second, with a rooftop terrace and family studios.

For a hostel bed, choose by mood: Itaca by the Cathedral for a small, friendly place; Generator in Gràcia for a big, social one with a bar; Onefam near Paral·lel for free dinners and group outings; or the Sea Hostel for a bed on the beach. Poble Sec, Gràcia and the streets near Sagrada Família are usually cheaper than the Gothic Quarter and El Born, and all are a walk or a short metro ride from the sights.

The Tourist Tax on a Budget

Barcelona's tourist tax is charged per person, per night, on top of the room price, so it adds up for groups. For stays from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the combined regional and city amounts are:

Where you stayPer person, per night (2026–27)
Youth hostels€6.00
Most other hotels and guesthouses€7.00
Four-star hotels€8.40
Tourist apartments€9.50

You pay for no more than 7 nights in a row, and under-17s are exempt. The city part rises by €1 on 1 April 2027, so a trip in spring 2027 costs a little more in tax than one before then.

Ways to Save

  • Avoid the big weeks. Prices jump during Mobile World Congress (1–4 March 2027), La Mercè in late September (23–27 September in 2026) and the Festa Major de Gràcia in mid-August.
  • Take the metro or bus from the airport. Metro L9 Sud needs an Airport ticket or a Hola Barcelona card; ordinary single tickets and the T-casual are not valid to or from the airport. The Aerobús runs to Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes.
  • Look for a guest kitchen. Hostels such as Casa Jam in Gràcia and Latroupe in Poblenou let you cook, and Onefam serves a free dinner most nights.
  • Read the extras. Some budget places charge for towels, padlocks or breakfast, or don't accept late check-ins. Check before you book.
  • Protect your things. Use the lockers in dorms, and keep phones and wallets zipped away on La Rambla and in the metro, where pickpockets often work in teams.
