Casa Amatller and Gaudí's Casa Batlló side by side on Passeig de Gràcia in the Eixample

Where to Stay in Eixample

The Eixample is the 19th-century grid north of Plaça de Catalunya, with Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Its wide streets are calmer at night than the old town, it has the city's biggest choice of hotels, and the metro is never far away.

The Short Answer

Stay near Passeig de Gràcia, in the right Eixample (Dreta), for Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, the big shops and the best metro links, including the airport train. Our pick is the Majestic Hotel & Spa, a classic grand hotel with a rooftop pool a block from La Pedrera.

Stay in the left Eixample (Esquerra), around Enric Granados and Rambla de Catalunya, for quieter, café-lined streets a few minutes from Passeig de Gràcia; Hotel Granados 83 is here. The lower Eixample, between Gran Via and Plaça de Catalunya, is the easiest walk to the Gothic Quarter. For Sagrada Família, see our Sagrada Família guide: the basilica is at the far end of the Eixample, 35–40 minutes on foot from Plaça de Catalunya.

What to Know Before You Book

  • Street side or courtyard side. The Eixample's avenues, such as Gran Via, Aragó and Diagonal, carry heavy traffic. Rooms facing the inner block courtyard are much quieter.
  • Book Gaudí houses ahead. Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are busiest in summer and on holidays, so buy tickets on their official sites before you go.
  • Hostals are on upper floors. Budget guesthouses here are usually a floor or several of an apartment building, so check for an elevator and reception hours before you book.
  • Watch your phone on Passeig de Gràcia. It is a safe, busy avenue, but crowds outside Casa Batlló and the metro draw pickpockets, as in the old town.

Getting Around the Eixample

  • On foot: Casa Batlló to the Cathedral in the Gothic Quarter is about 20 minutes; Plaça de Catalunya to Sagrada Família is 35–40 minutes. The top of Passeig de Gràcia leads straight into Gràcia.
  • Metro: Passeig de Gràcia (L2, L3, L4) for Casa Batlló, Diagonal (L3, L5) for La Pedrera, Verdaguer (L4, L5), and Universitat (L1) and Sant Antoni (L2) on the lower side.
  • From the airport: the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya takes about 35 minutes. From Terminal 2, the R2 Nord train reaches Sants in about 20 minutes and then continues to Passeig de Gràcia.
