Where to Stay in Barcelona with Kids

Barcelona is an easy city for families: compact, sunny, with beaches and parks a short ride from the sights. The right base depends on whether you want to walk to Gaudí or to the sand, and on how much space you need.

The Short Answer

Stay in the Eixample for the best mix of space, calm nights and location: you can walk to Passeig de Gràcia and the old town, and many hotels have pools and real family rooms. Our pick is Hotel Granados 83, on a quiet street in the left Eixample, with family rooms, duplexes and a rooftop pool.

Stay in Poblenou or by Port Olímpic if the beach comes first; the sand is calmer than at Barceloneta and several hotels have pools and two-room family rooms. Stay near Sagrada Família for an apartment with a kitchen at a lower price. The Gothic Quarter puts the sights on your doorstep, but its narrow, crowded lanes and late noise are harder work with small children.

Tips for Barcelona with Kids

  • Children don't pay the tourist tax. Under-17s are exempt from Barcelona's per-person, per-night tax, so only the adults' share is added to your bill.
  • Check pool dates. Many rooftop pools are seasonal. Catalonia hotels, for example, close their pools from 31 October to 31 March, so ask before you book a winter trip around one.
  • Book timed tickets early. Sagrada Família and Park Güell sell tickets online only. Latecomers aren't admitted at Sagrada Família, and Park Güell gives you 30 minutes after your entry time. Morning slots are easier with young kids.
  • Know the beach flags. Flags on Barcelona's beaches show the sea conditions, and smoking is not allowed on the sand.
  • Keep bags zipped. Pickpockets work La Rambla, the metro and the busiest sights, and a stroller bag is an easy target. Keep valuables on you, not hanging off the handles.

Getting Around with Kids

  • From the airport: a taxi takes about 20–35 minutes to the center, depending on traffic, and is the easiest option with luggage and small children. The Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya takes about 35 minutes.
  • Metro: L4 links the old town with Barceloneta and Poblenou's beaches, L2 and L5 stop at Sagrada Família, and L3 runs from La Rambla to Paral·lel, Espanya and Sants.
  • Parks: the Ciutadella park, between El Born and Poblenou, is the closest big green space to the old town. See our El Born guide for hotels nearby.
