By the Where to Stay in Barcelona editorial team · Updated November 5, 2026
The Short Answer
Stay in the upper Raval, between Plaça de Catalunya and the MACBA, for the best of the neighborhood: galleries, cafés and the Boqueria market close by, with Plaça de Catalunya and the airport buses under 10 minutes' walk away. Our pick is Casa Camper, a design hotel with a free all-day snack buffet and hammocks in its lounges.
The middle Raval, around the Rambla del Raval and Carrer de l'Hospital, is lively and mixed, with good-value hotels such as the Barceló Raval and Hotel Sant Agustí. The lower Raval, toward Drassanes, is grittier and can feel uneasy late at night; first-time visitors who want calm streets are better off choosing a hotel near La Rambla or in the upper half.
El Raval's Areas Compared
| Area | Best for | Downsides |
|---|---|---|
| Upper Raval (MACBA, Carrer del Carme) | Design hotels, galleries, cafés | Skate and bar noise around the MACBA square |
| Carrer de Pelai and the La Rambla edge | First visits, airport buses, shopping | Crowds; pickpockets on La Rambla |
| Rambla del Raval and Carrer de l'Hospital | Food from around the world, value | Busy and mixed at night |
| Lower Raval (toward Drassanes) | Low prices, the port | Rougher streets after dark |

Safety and Noise in El Raval
- Petty theft is the main risk, as in the rest of the old town. Thieves work La Rambla, the Boqueria and the metro, often in teams that use distraction. Keep phones off café tables and bags closed and in front of you.
- The lower streets feel different at night. Below Carrer de l'Hospital, and especially toward Drassanes, some lanes are dimly lit and quiet after dark. Stick to busy streets such as the Rambla del Raval and Carrer de Sant Pau, or take a taxi to your door.
- Expect some noise. The MACBA square draws skaters by day and groups at night, and the Rambla del Raval has bar terraces. Ask for an interior or upper-floor room.
- It is a real neighborhood. The Raval is one of the city's most diverse areas, with residents from all over the world. Be a considerate guest, especially at night.
Getting Around El Raval
- On foot: the MACBA to Plaça de Catalunya is under 10 minutes; La Rambla, the Boqueria and the Gothic Quarter are a few minutes from anywhere in the Raval. The full length of La Rambla, from Plaça de Catalunya to the Columbus monument, is about 20 minutes.
- Metro: Liceu and Drassanes (L3) on La Rambla, Catalunya (L1, L3) and Universitat (L1) at the top, and Sant Antoni (L2) and Paral·lel (L2, L3) on the western edge.
- From the airport: the Aerobús stops at Plaça de Catalunya (about 35 minutes) and Plaça d'Espanya. The upper Raval is a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya.
- Next door: Sant Antoni market and Poble Sec's tapas bars are just west of the Raval, across the Ronda.
