Where to Stay in Gràcia

Gràcia was a separate town until the late 1800s, and it still feels like one: low buildings, small squares with terrace bars, and independent shops. It sits just above the Eixample, between Passeig de Gràcia and Park Güell.

The Short Answer

Stay in lower Gràcia, at the top of Passeig de Gràcia around Jardinets, for the easiest of both worlds: Gràcia's squares a few minutes uphill and the Eixample, the metro and La Pedrera a few minutes down. Our pick is Hotel Casa Fuster, in a 1908 Modernista building on that corner, with a rooftop pool.

Stay in the Vila de Gràcia, around Plaça del Sol, Plaça de la Virreina and Carrer de Verdi, for the neighborhood at its most local, with terrace bars, small cinemas and cheap places to eat. Upper Gràcia, toward Fontana and Lesseps, is calmer and a little closer to Park Güell. Gràcia suits repeat visitors, couples and slow travelers; first-timers who want to walk to the Gothic Quarter will find it about 30 minutes away.

What to Know Before You Book

  • The Festa Major de Gràcia takes over the neighborhood for about a week in mid-August, around 15 August. Residents decorate whole streets, and there are concerts and crowds late into the night. It is a great time to visit and a hard time to sleep, so book early and ask for a quiet room.
  • Plaça del Sol is the loud one. The square fills with people on warm evenings. Other squares, such as Plaça de la Virreina, are calmer.
  • Park Güell needs a timed ticket. Tickets are sold online only, and you have 30 minutes after the time on your ticket to get in.
  • Many lanes are narrow. Taxis can reach most streets, but some hostels are up stairs, so check for an elevator if you need one.

Getting Around Gràcia

  • On foot: Plaça del Sol to Plaça de Catalunya takes about 30 minutes, downhill along Passeig de Gràcia, and to Park Güell about 30 minutes uphill.
  • Metro: Diagonal (L3, L5) at the bottom, Fontana and Lesseps (L3) higher up. L3 runs straight down to Passeig de Gràcia, Catalunya and Liceu on La Rambla.
  • From the airport: the Aerobús to Plaça de Catalunya (about 35 minutes), then metro L3 up to Diagonal or Fontana.
  • Next door: the Eixample starts at the bottom of Gràcia, and Sagrada Família is a short metro ride away.
